Undergraduate college admission essays

I share our essay prompts for the next year each June with the hopes that we'll give you plenty of time to think about which one is right for you. If you are thinking about writing your essays this early, I hope you'll revisit them before you actually submit an application. It's amazing how much can change in a few months. I have three pieces of advice for you as you think about your essays:

Required for all applicants Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School including preferred admission and dual degree programs to which you are applying at the University of Michigan. How would that curriculum support your interests?

Required for all applicants School of Education Applicants Only: What do you want the readers of your application to know about you apart from courses, grades, and test scores? Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it.

If this sounds like you, then please share your story. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale.

Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you?

What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? Please provide a statement that addresses your reasons for transferring and the objectives you hope to achieve.

Describe a time when you made a meaningful contribution to others in which the greater good was your focus. Discuss the challenges and rewards of making your contribution. How did you respond? How did the challenge affect your beliefs? What is the hardest part of being a teenager now?

What advice would you give a younger sibling or friend assuming they would listen to you?A Strong College Application essay Will make you stand out from the crowd. You want to get into a university, but you need to stand out in the highly impressive applicant pool. According to US News, the average top 10 university acceptance rate is 8%.

The essay component demonstrates your ability to write clearly and concisely on a selected topic and helps you distinguish yourself in your own voice. Describe the unique qualities that attract you to the specific undergraduate College or School (including preferred admission and dual degree programs) to which you are applying at the University of Michigan.

How would that curriculum support your interests? The Common Application Personal Essay. Freshmen Applicants. When you apply to college, you’ll need to complete an essay as part of your application. This is your opportunity to show admission officers who you are and to provide information about yourself that didn’t fit in other areas of your application.

Those applying with the Common Application are asked to respond to two short essay prompts. Those applying with the QuestBridge National College Match Application are asked to complete a short Yale QuestBridge Questionnaire, available via the Yale Admissions Status Portal after an application is received and a student activates his/her status portal.
